How will you facilitate an authentic collaborative learning experience to promote deeper student engagement with content skills and concepts?

  • The main way that I will promote deeper student engagement is by having the student’ work within tools that they enjoy using and know about. One way that this can be accomplished is by having students share which components they have worked with and how each could be used within the classroom. We would come to a mutual agreement on how each tool will be used within the course and stick to those guidelines for interacting in the classroom.

As members of collaborative groups, how will you support students’ efforts to identify solutions to the problem you are using as the framework for your PBL instructional unit?

  • Students will be able to interact with me on each of the tools that will be available to them for group interactions. In many cases, I will initiate the collaborations by sending the initial postings, providing guiding questions, etc. Since I will be on each of these tools as well, I should be able to follow up and back track group work to help assist with any problems that may come up.

What criteria will you use to assign learners to collaborative groups, including a rationale? What will be the size of the collaborative groups you will include in your unit?

  • The criteria that I will use when creating groups will partially be based on which students have worked together before. After watching students interact with whom they chose, I can determine who collaborates well while staying on task and who does not. I will also make sure that students are working with members outside of their norm so the groups can be more diversified. Groups will have four to six members in each, depending upon the class size.

Which digital tools and websites are you considering for collaboration in your unit?

  • One tool that I would like to use is Facebook. Most of the students are already on this social networking site, so I would create a group page and allow social interaction from there. Twitter is another tool that I would like to utilize due to the students’ interactions with the tool already. This tool can be used for discussion along with Facebook chat and Skype as well. Skype will be beneficial because it would allow voice and visual support when having interactions.

How will you assess participation of the students in their collaborative groups?

  • Students will be assessed based on their initial interaction within their groups and their responses to the other members in the group. Since the group sizes are fairly small, a response/interaction with all other group members is expected of them.
